The Monash Medical Technology Lab (MMTL)
was founded in 2024 and is directed by Associate Professor
Khoa N. Cao.
Khoa trained in medicine at Monash University and Austin Health, health economics
at the University of London (LSHTM) and engineering at Stanford University as an
inaugural Fulbright Future Scholar, where he graduated from the world-renowned
Stanford Biodesign
program and was advised by Professor Paul Yock, the founding director of the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign.
Prior to his faculty appointment, Khoa founded an investor-backed peripheral neurotech startup
in Silicon Valley and worked in medtech at the World Health Organization, IBM Watson (medical AI),
the University of Oxford (surgical AI), the University of California, San Francisco (adaptive BCIs) and Stanford University.
He has previously founded Australia's longest-running medical hackathon
and an award-winning global health startup (MedTech Actuator alumni).
Khoa is also proficient across Biodesign/medical technology strategy, including unmet need/solution identification,
regulatory, intellectual property, reimbursement and commercialisation strategy. In addition to Stanford Biodesign,
he has embarked on further training with A/Prof. Jan Pietzsch (Stanford Biodesign, Wing Tech Inc) in
Health Economics & Market Access and Jeff Schox (Stanford Law, Schox Patent Group) in IP/Patent Drafting.
Our Interests
Our technology interests are diverse and encompass medical AI, digital health, neurotech, brain-computer interfaces,
medical 3D printing and surgical robotics. We also collectively have experience across computer science,
artificial intelligence, mechatronics, product design, electrical engineering and neuroengineering.
We are always looking for talented collaborators and team members to join our team!
We seek tinkerers and builders with a high curiosity quotient, intellectual humility and a bias to action.
Prior medtech experience is a bonus, but not a requirement. Reach out if this sounds like you!
